About this Event
MECA&D’s Inaugural Empty Bowls event will take place on Thursday, May 1st, from 5:30-7:00 PM in the campus cafe at 522 Congress Street in Portland. The event offers attendees a hearty meal, a handmade bowl, and a powerful reminder of hunger: the “Empty Bowl.”
Since its launch in 1990, ceramic artists around the world have organized Empty Bowls events, raising tens of millions of dollars for local food banks, soup kitchens, and shelters. The Empty Bowls organization ensures that all funds raised stay within the community.
There will be two dinner seatings: first seating begins at 5:30-6:15pm, second seating is from 6:15 to 7:00pm. MECA&D will pre-sell 200 tickets for $35, including a meal and a handmade bowl to take home. Tickets for MECA&D students and children under 12 are $20.
Guest chef Hannah Ryder of Twelve Restaurant will create a signature dish for the event. Thank you to Sodexo for donating the food for the event.
Students in the Empty Bowls course have volunteered and researched local nonprofits addressing food insecurity and selected in Portland as the beneficiary. Wayside uses food to reduce waste, fight hunger, and strengthen community through volunteer-driven programming and partnerships across Southern Maine.
