Join us to develop your communication skills and learn how to meaningfully engage decision-makers about issues you are concerned about!
About this Event

EmpowerU is a hybrid training program designed to equip participants with the skills to engage meaningfully with decision-makers using science-based information. Instructors do not advocate for any particular position; instead, they focus on teaching practical communication strategies, how to effectively present science-based information, and how to build strong, respectful relationships with decision-makers.

Originally developed with natural resources in mind, the EmpowerU curriculum is issue-neutral and easily adaptable to any high-priority concern—from mental health to education, public safety, or beyond. Participants are required to come to the training with a specific issue in mind that they are passionate about or currently working on.

When: The EmpowerU program occurs across 8 weeks (September 15- November 8, 2025) with approximately 11 hours of interactive online training (via Canvas) and assignments due every week, AND 4 live workshop sessions (3 via Zoom and 1 in person).

Workshop Dates:

Live Workshop Schedule:

  • Tuesday, September 15, 2025, 1.5 hours (Zoom) (6:00 pm-7:30 pm)
  • Tuesday, October 7, 2025; 1.5 hours (Zoom) (6:00 pm- 7:30 pm)
  • Tuesday, October 21, 2025; 1.5 hours (Zoom) (6:00 pm-7:30 pm)
  • Saturday, November 8, 2025, 4 hours (In-person) (9:00 am-1:00 pm) *

* In person will be located at 3695 Lake Dr., Cocoa, FL 32926

Expectations: All registrants should be prepared to engage in this training, meaning you arrive with an issue in mind, plan to complete approximately 2.5+ hours of online work each week (due each week on Tuesday and Saturdays), and attend all four live workshop sessions. No prior knowledge is needed; only interest and willingness to engage.

Outline: Skills are introduced and then incorporated into a personalized engagement plan on an issue of your choice. The online learning modules include self-directed assignments (readings, videos, research, writing) and discussions with other course participants. You must identify an issue during week 1, so start brainstorming. By the end of the course, you will have developed a 4–5-page roadmap to address your issue.

The online modules will guide participants to:

  • Learn about engagement
  • Learn how to find reliable information
  • Identify who can solve specific problems
  • Understand influence, power, and persuasion
  • Review best practices for listening and questioning
  • Learn about framing an issue
  • Create a plan to engage the right people to move their issue forward.

During the Zoom and in-person training, participants will:

• Understand commonalities and practice reflective listening

• Develop questions and frame issues

• Practice one-on-one meeting skills or presenting at a public meeting

• Review their engagement plan with others to make it better

NOTE: Classes and events may be canceled at any time due to low registration or other circumstances, with full refunds issued for paid events. Similar classes or events are often offered on future dates.
