We are incredibly grateful for the partnership we've developed with the Joslyn Art Museum. The educational session with artist Henry Payer on ribbon work was truly inspiring for the women in our program. His insights into the history and traditional styles of ribbon work became the impetus for our participants to create beautiful wearing blankets, which they will be showcasing at our upcoming event:
Please join us to celebrate and learn about this community partnership that evolved into an art installation on view at The Joslyn. The program will begin with a conversation featuring:
Henry Payer Jr., Ho-Chunk artist
Tami Buffalohead and Valery Killscrow Copeland, Healing Ribbons
Annika K. Johnson, PhD, Stacy and Bruce Simon Curator of Native American Art, Joslyn Art Museum
Ingrid Cho, Curatorial Assistant, Native American Art, Joslyn Art Museum
The presenters will share insights into their collaboration, highlighting the Indigenous artform of ribbon work appliqué in the installation Appliqué sur le terrain, currently on view in The Joslyn’s American galleries.
Following the conversation, members of Healing Ribbons will model the wearing blankets and other regalia inspired by this collaboration, sharing stories of our vibrant culture and traditions.
Admission is free, and we would love for you to be part of this special event.
Healing Ribbons began when several intergenerational Indigenous women came together to sew and create as a way to honor and remember loved ones and heal from historical trauma. Since then, it has grown into an organization that promotes holistic wellbeing, healing, positive cultural identity, and cultural revitalization.
