What is the focus of the workshop?
Would you like to participate a workshop aimed at addressing racial objectification, fetishization, and sexual racism within romantic or intimate relationships specifically designed for trans women & trans feminine of color by trans women of color?
In this workshop, you will have the opportunity to contribute to the development of resources that:
• Recognise and acknowledge the unique challenges faced by trans women & trans feminine of color resulting from intersecting identities, such as racism, transphobia, and misogyny within intimate relationships.
• Explore the characteristics of healthy and respectful relationships for trans women & trans feminine of color.
• Discuss the social changes necessary to support and promote healthy and respectful relationships.
This workshop provides a platform for amplifying your voices, creating positive social change, and advocating for healthy and respectful relationships for trans women & trans feminine of color.
What are the expected outcomes of the workshop?
1/ Creation of a concise resource addressing healthy relationships for trans women & trans feminine of color and tackling issues related to racial objectification, fetishization, and sexual racism.
2/ Development of a brief resource focusing on healthy relationships for partners of trans women & trans feminine of color and raising awareness about the impacts of objectification, fetishization, and sexual racism.
3/ Contribution to broader resources intended for practitioners (workers) in the fields of family violence prevention, mental health, and violence prevention.
Who is the target audience for this workshop?
The workshop is open to trans women of color, trans feminine individuals of color, and individuals from culturally specific identities, such as Fa’afafine, Kathoey, Kwaa-Sing-Bit, Sistergirls, Waria, and Kinnar, regardless of their sexual orientation or the individuals they are dating.
Who are the facilitators?
Sasja Sÿdek
Sasja Sÿdek, an indigenous Singaporean woman of colour, takes immense pride in her identity as a trans woman. She serves as the lead peer worker in the Transfemme project, specifically catering to the needs of trans women belonging to racial minority groups. Sasja's deep passion lies in putting an end to the violence that trans women face from men. She is also a co-founder of both Trans Sisters United and Trans Pride March Melbourne. Sasja has made significant contributions to the book "Nothing To Hide - Voices of Trans & Gender Diverse of Australia". Additionally, she has her own television show called "Trans Fabulous" on Channel 31 and fulfils the roles of a radio host and producer at Queering The Air on 3CR. Sasja's unrelenting advocacy for transgender rights stems from her unwavering dedication to promoting equality and human rights.
Maya Agarwal
Maya Agarwal is a proud trans woman of colour and first generation immigrant. In her day job, she works in corporate strategy and transformation, while also teaching at the Melbourne Business School part time. Outside this, she is passionate about improving the lives of the LGBTQ+ and gender-diverse communities. She is a director on the board of Minus-18, has worked with Transgender Victoria (TGV) and, more recently, the Transfemme project.
Mish Kumar-Jonson
Mish Kumar-Jonson is a non-binary, queer, neurodivergent social worker of colour living, working, and learning on unceded Wurundjeri, Woiwurung and Bunurung Land. Through their clinical, strategical and philanthropy work, Mish seeks to provide people with safe spaces to navigate through barriers that they experience to achieving and maintaining wellbeing. Mish has a keen interest in supporting the diversities and intersections of the LGBTQIA+ community to access support, funding, and opportunities to soar and thrive. Outside of work Mish loves dessert hoping, fostering kittens and dreaming up building projects for her wife to complete!
