Empowering Bat Conservation:
Harnessing Environmental DNA for Ecological Insight
Bats are crucial for maintaining robust ecosystems. Yet, studying them comes with significant challenges, given their nocturnal behavior, small body sizes, flight capabilities, and tendency to occupy difficult to access locations. To unravel the mysteries surrounding these enigmatic creatures, Northern Arizona University’s Bat Ecology and Genetics Lab leverages cutting-edge genetic technologies. By isolating minute traces of DNA left behind when bats defecate, feed and even fly, we can gain critical insight into their ecology. Join Savannah Marriott as she explains how through the innovative use of DNA analysis, we can illuminate the hidden lives of bats, and empower conservation efforts aimed at safeguarding their populations and the ecosystems they support.
Doors open at 6:30pm.
*The event is free, but space is limited, and registration is required to attend. The talk will be live-streamed to our YouTube Channel for those unable to attend in person.

Savannah Marriott is a molecular biologist at Northern Arizona University’s Bat Ecology and Genetics Lab, specializing in DNA analysis for wildlife conservation. She got her start studying human neurological disease and developing medical technologies. She is passionate about delving into the intricate workings of biological processes at the cellular and molecular level, and then employing that knowledge in creative applications.
