Lisa See is a New York Times bestselling author of Lady Tan’s Circle of Women, a historical novel inspired by Tan Yunxian, a female physician from 15th century China. It is a triumphant reimagining of the life of a woman who was remarkable in the Ming dynasty and would be considered remarkable today. Her other novels include The Island of Sea Women, The Tea Girl of Hummingbird Lane, Snow Flower and the Secret Fan, Peony in Love, Shanghai Girls, China Dolls, and Dreams of Joy. She is also the author of On Gold Mountain, which tells the story of her Chinese American family’s settlement in Los Angeles. See was the recipient of the Golden Spike Award from the Chinese Historical Association of Southern California and the Historymaker’s Award from the Chinese American Museum. She was also named National Woman of the Year by the Organization of Chinese American Women.
Lorraine Wilcox is an acupuncturist, a faculty member at Emperor’s College, and the translator of Tan Yunxian's MiscellaneousRecords of a Female Doctor which contains 31 case studies from Tan's medical practice, which are the earliest known writings by a female doctor in China. Tan Yunxian primarily treated women in her practice, and these records reflect insights into female patients of the time. Wilcox’s other books and translations include Moxibustion: A Modern Clinical Handbook, Moxibustion: The Power of Mugwort Fire, The Great Compendium of Acupuncture and Moxibustion, Outline of Female Medicine, Raising the Dead and Returning Life.
