Emo Verkerk (b. 1955, Amsterdam) is recognized for his highly individual and philosophical approach to painting and sculpture. His works focus on perception; in their aim to depict an unvarnished representation of life, they reveal unconscious connections and projections.
His portraits principally depict historical and literary figures with whose life, experiences, or narrative Verkerk feels a profound kinship. Deconstructing and reorganizing elements of his compositions to create friction, he reveals that the act of looking itself is a creative process, where new worlds are created.
