About this Event

Emma Slade (Lopen Ani Pema Deki) on Gross National Happiness – what lessons can we learn from the realities of this Bhutanese vision?

We don’t often get a speaker with as unusual a backstory as Emma, a Buddhist nun she’s also a Cambridge graduate and CFA charterholder with a background in economics and investment, as well as someone with an intimate knowledge of Bhutan. At the event she’ll talk frankly about how the Gross National Happiness model of Bhutan came into existence; its format, its potential impact on other countries and holistic views of economic development, and why it has now been scaled back within the country itself. The latter will mean an honest assessment of the lessons that can be learnt from Bhutan and its version of GNH versus the Scandinavian model. She’ll also make reference to other ideas of holistic development such as 'doughnut economics' and current initiatives by the Scottish Government to look at such ideas.
