Abstract: The authors of the Hebrew Bible used many different metaphors to describe the phenomenon of speech, and one of these metaphors imagines words as physical bodies or structures which could be “set up” or “caused to stand.” What does it really mean to “cause a word to stand,” though? Does that describe the uttering of a statement, an affirmation of its accuracy, or the act of following through on a promise? In this talk, I will use both cognitive linguistic approaches and material-cultural evidence to reconstruct the logic of this metaphor.
Bio: Emily Branton earned her B.A. in Religious Studies at Smith College and a M.A. in Religious Studies from the Divinity School at the University of Chicago. She is currently a doctoral candidate at the University of North Carolina - Chapel Hill, where she is completing a dissertation titled "Words that Stand: Efficacious Speech in Ancient Israel."
