Gustaf Ljunggren/Emil de WaalAvantgarde meets easy-listening, meets ethno-jazz, turns cinematically dreamy before dissolving into edgy destructiveness. Curiosity and transformation is what turns two
of the Danish music scene's most prolific characters into a symbiotic and ever-evolving musical entity. Swedish multi-instrumentalist Gustaf Ljunggren and Danish
drummer Emil de Waal have released three albums.
Gustaf Ljunggren and Emil de Waal are two artists who neither look up, nor down but instead meet humanity directly at musical eye level. With a genuine passion to both take part in and share, they manage to lift their musical merit into something
honorable and inclusive, as well as socially responsible. Combining their musical energy and presence has led to collaborations with artists as diverse as Bill Laswell, Wayne Horwitz, Band of Horses and Ellie Goulding. Ljunggren and de Waal made their album debut as a duo with the self-titled ‘Gustaf Ljunggren/Emil de Waal’ in 2018. Among a multitude of accolades, the release led to
a nomination for a Danish Music Award with more than
500 plays on DR P8 (the National Danish radio´s main Jazz channel) and a feature on an Ibiza-compilation from the renowned ‘Music for Dreams’-label.
After performing numerous concerts on various continents and experimenting with musical constellations with up to fifty musicians, Gustaf Ljunggren and Emil de Waal
have managed to outdo themselves yet again. The duo´s second album 'Måne' is even more personally reflective than the debut album, although still playful and spontaneous. Though this time the duo have delved deeper into their collective memory. Gustaf explains: “For example, the tune 'Stuk' is a kind of contemporary
image of "something" from the past, and that "something" could be music Emil and I have been listening to on a Walkman growing up. Without taking away the imagination and free association from the listener, several of the new tracks leave a clear impression of memories where details may have been forgotten, but the feeling still remains.
