About this Event
This study day will provide participants with a practical introduction to emergency, trauma, and critical care in low-income countries / limited resource settings. This unique day is for nurses, midwives, and other allied health care professionals (including students) who want to travel and work in low-income countries and to network with other like-minded individuals. If you are thinking or planning to work overseas this will give you an opportunity to explore possibilities and identify how best to prepare for your trip.
The study day will be delivered by an experienced multi-disciplinary faculty who have extensive experience of working in a range of settings.
Why should you attend?
Working overseas is different to working in the UK, you will have the opportunity to see and participant in different cultures, health systems and clinical practices. Working overseas can have a long-lasting positive effect on individuals personal and professional development. NHS staff with international experiences bring fresh perspectives, new skills, ideas and approaches that can be adapted and used in UK practice. This includes, improved clinical and leadership skills, resourcefulness, cultural competence, and resilience.
This is a new opportunity for nurses, midwives and AHPs, traditionally medical students are encouraged and supported to undertake an international elective as part of their undergraduate and post-graduate specialist training, however, have been limited for nurses, midwives and AHPs. This study day has been designed to help access opportunities and network with those who have managed to overcome the barriers and work in other settings. We have found that employers are beginning to see short international placements as a strategy for staff retention and professional development.
Topics include:
• Challenges of Emergency, trauma, and critical care in low-income settings
• Oxygen therapy and invasive ventilation strategies
• Recognition of the deteriorating patient
• Rehabilitation following critical illness and the role of Physiotherapists.
• Nutrition in critical illness and the role of Dieticians
