Participants will be able to consider the implications for therapy with clients where there are ongoing legal, media, or other such events surrounding the incident, as well as understanding the importance of credible evidence about the event in the context of treatment planning. We will look at the legal process and implications as well as the treatment of not just what the individual experienced at the event, but also providing statements, evidence, trials and enquiries.

Professor Alan Barrett is a Consultant Clinical Psychologist and works in the NHS as the Strategic Clinical Lead at the Greater Manchester Resilience Hub, which he was instrumental in establishing following the 2017 Manchester Arena Attack.
With more than 25years of clinical experience Alan has worked in a broad range of provider and regulatory settings and contributes to several national forums and expert reference groups.
Alan currently holds an honorary chair at the University of Salford as a professor of psychological therapies. Qualified himself in the delivery of NICE approved interventions for psychological trauma, including trauma-focused Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (tCBT), Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing (EMDR), and Narrative Exposure Therapy (NET).
Alan, including direct personal intervention, has overseen, supervised, and reviewed the treatment of more than 4000 military trauma cases, 3000 terrorism cases, and over a 1500 other trauma cases comprising staff from healthcare, police, fire & rescue, along with members of the public.
Alan is a UK representative at the International Counter Terrorism Preparedness Network (CTPN), as an invited member of the Humanitarian Assistance and Psycho- Social Support subgroup (HAPSS) which concerns itself with developing practice- based evidence of what works best for the psychosocial impact following terrorist attacks.
Additionally, Alan provides independent consultation to a variety of national and international organisations on psychological health & safety, trauma-responsive practice, and psychologically informed systems.
Gill Szafranski
Gill is an EMDR consultant and the Clinical lead for the new Sexual Assault and Abuse Pathfinder Partnership hosted by the Greater Manchester Resilience Hub.
She became involved in supporting people affected by the Manchester arena attack soon after the incident in 2017 and has worked at the Resilience hub providing a variety of psychological support including delivering EMDR to individuals, and latterly as the Clinical Lead for the arena workstream.
She was significantly involved in supporting those involved in the subsequent public inquiry, including those bereaved and injured, professionals and witnesses.
For the past three years Gill has provided EMDR supervision across the trust to a wide variety of clinicans in primary and secondary care services.
Previously Gill worked alongside Alan at the Military Veterans service, providing EMDR and other psychological intervention to veterans who presented with complex mental health needs.
Gill has also provided therapy for people who were involved in the Tunisia terrorist attack in 2015
Jenni Willbourn is a Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) & Eye Movement Desensitisation & Reprocessing (EMDR) therapist specialising in the treatment of psychological trauma of children, young people, and their families. Historically working within service lead roles, Jenni has worked at the Greater Manchester Resilience Hub (GMRH) from its establishment in 2017. Leading family days where more than 600 individuals with a shared experience of the Arena terrorist attack could come together, Jenni helped them support each other and learn about effective strategies to manage psychological trauma within family systems.
In March 2020 Jenni co-developed a business case and service model with Alan to respond to the psychological impacts experienced by the health and care workforce during the COVID pandemic. A model that influenced the roll-out of similar wellbeing support hubs throughout England. Jenni currently works at the Greater Manchester resilience Hub as the Clinical Lead for workforce wellbeing.
As a member of the Local Health Resilience Partnership, Jenni additionally represents mental health services regionally within the Emergency Preparedness Resilience & Response (EPRR) Agenda.
