This CPD aims to explore clinical application of EMDR within a Forensic or Secure environment.
About this Event

This CPD explores ways of adapting EMDR within Clinical settings to ensure it targets the challenges working within this population within the framework of all 8 phases of EMDR, leaning towards a more Attachment informed way of working clinically.

It considers how one may adapt clinical history taking, including how to construct relevant and succinct timelines where there are multiple domains of both experienced trauma and perpetrated offending, recommendations for clustering targets, obstacles in trying to access memories, defensive parts using an IFS approach, links to survival and ongoing defences. Clinical examples of ways to access currently defended memory due to shame, fear of further punishment, amnesia or other relevant factors that might inhibit collation of a concise Case conceptualisation.

An overview of the relevance of attachment informed ways of working, exploration of early trauma and neglect on brain development, relevance to social skill development, and disordered behaviours.

How to adapt stabalisation, systemic factors, and psychoeducation around experiences of trauma and how to manage this in the context of this population when perpetrating trauma to others, sensitively whilst encouraging accountability and not ‘over formulating’ offending to reduce healthy accountability. The risks this can pose in therapy at what times and how to mitigate the risk.

How to adapt phase 3 for populations with complex needs, learning difficulties, or who are highly defended at risk of harm from others. The impact of neurodiversity, brain injury, effects of drugs, medications and other relevant contraindications.

Cosiderations of interweaves in phase 4, using techniques to work with shame and guilt, the relevance of ‘healthy guilt’ and working with anger, vulnerability and the fears this evokes within a secure environment.

Phase 5 will explore what are ‘good enough PC’s, ecological SUDS, and the need for accepting what is, grief and loss in this population.

Phase 6 issues when completing body scans and how to work with such.

How to close safely and how to use future templates around risk reduction.

The Presenters

The presenters are both EMDR practitioners, Sarah Robinson is an EMDR consultant, has supported Laurel Parnell in delivering her Attachment Informed Workshops , Mark Brayne EMDR Focus Attachment Informed EMDR workshops and has previously been the EMDR and Trauma Lead in Medium Secure services for 6 years. She currently is Pathway Lead and Consultant Psychological Therapist in a tertiary Specialist Psychology Service in NHS for EMDR and Trauma.

Natalie Bailey is an EMDR practitioner, a qualified Social Worker and Psychotherapist, and has previously worked in various adult mental health and CAMHS teams in the community. Natalie currently is part of the Midlands Integrated Therapy Service, working with a complex male population delivering trauma focused EMDR and CBT.

The presenters have a strong focus on clinical application and all work presented will include confidential clinical examples of when EMDR can and should not be offered. We hope this day provides a safe space to explore some of the nuances working with EMDR in offending populations and clinical examples of working inclusively but safely.
