About this Event
Local textile artist Varsha Gill will walk you through the basics of botanical illustration and how to bring plant images to life with stitchwork.
This workshop will provide plenty of time to work on your creation. We'll provide all the materials and equipment you need, as well as plant books, photos and living plants that you can use as reference material.
Details
- Tickets: $60, all-inclusive. No additional taxes or fees.
- Sliding Scale Tickets: We offer a limited number of sliding scale tickets (pay-what-you-can) to those who can't comfortably afford the regular price. Email [email protected] to request a sliding scale ticket.
- Age & skill: All skill levels are welcome. Ages 15+ (10+ with an adult)
Getting There
- Slocan Community Hall is in Slocan Park, a one-minute walk from 29th Avenue Skytrain Station and bus loop.
- Bus numbers #16, 29, 33 take you to 29th Avenue Station. Limited street parking is available.
- We recommend walking, taking the bus, riding your bike, or carpooling when possible.
Accessibility
- Slocan Hall is an indoor space located in Slocan Park, and can be accessed from a partially paved and partially grassed pathway in the park, adjacent to 29th Ave; wheelchairs should be able to access both areas unless extensive rainfall occurs.

About the Facilitator
Varsha Gill (she/her) is a textile artist, filmmaker, community arts facilitator, and social worker who believes in the transformative power of art for social and environmental justice. Raised on unceded Musqueam, Squamish, and Tsleil-Waututh territories, with family roots in Delhi and Punjab, her work envisions a world where people and land nurture each other as good medicine. Varsha is currently pursuing a master’s of social work at the University of Victoria, integrating land and arts-based practices into a trauma-informed, decolonial, healing approach. Alongside her studies, she facilitates discussions about destigmatizing menstruation with her film,; co-runs free community skill-sharing workshops through @slub club; facilitates ecological arts workshops with local organizations; and creates naturally dyed textiles and embroidery art with her garden-grown plants as @dyedsmiling.
