This taster session explores embossing techniques to produce subtle images on paper. The process uses no ink but creates raised and textured areas on paper using a range of different found materials. You will discover how to soak and use a range of papers to create embossed pieces using our traditional etching presses in the workshop.What experience do I need?
The workshop is suitable for complete beginners in printmaking. For those who have previous experience it will be an interesting way of developing skills and exploring a new technique.
What will I make?
You will produce a unique collection of well-defined permanent relief patterns using natural materials and man-made objects. You’ll come away from the workshop with a series of up to 15 different embossed prints on a range of specialist papers.
Who is my tutor?
This course is taught by Mick Welbourn and Joanna Wilkinson.
Joanna Wilkinson is a practising printmaker, illustrator and bookbinder. She uses printing, collage, analogue/slow photography and sometimes even old style colouring techniques like felt tips in her work. Joanna has recently completed an MA Creative Practice at Leeds Arts University and is also a Co-operative Member of Leeds Print Workshop.
Mick Welbourn is currently the manager of the printmaking workshops at Leeds Arts University, where he has worked for more than twenty years. Over the years he has taught printmaking to adults as well as to A level, Foundation, Degree and Masters students.
Do I need to bring anything?
All materials and equipment will be provided. This will include a range of different specialist printmaking papers and a selection of materials to emboss with.
If you have other items you’d like to try then please feel free to bring them along. e.g. rice, wool, leaves, rubber bands, lace, ribbon, strings etc.
