Embodied Awareness for Therapists

Develop fundamental skills for embodied relational work with clients
About this Event

When working with clients, an important aspect of the healing process happens out of awareness. How safe does the client feel in the therapeutic relationship, right now? This depends significantly on the therapist’s own sense of presence. A therapist who is grounded, centred, self-aware, is communicating non-verbally their ability to be present with the client. Furthermore the therapist’s ability to connect to their own sense of embodiment is fundamental to working relationally with clients in an embodied way.

This workshop is designed to help practicing therapists deepen their sense of embodied presence through some theoretical, but predominantly experiential exploration. We look at issues of safety, self/co-regulation, stabilisation and attunement by working with the breath, body awareness and movement. Topics include:

  • Breath cycle and eye contact
  • Yield, push and grounding
  • Channels of awareness
  • Working within the window of tolerance
  • Negotiating boundaries
  • Fundamental movement patterns
  • Mutual interaction and reciprocity

The focus is on resourcing therapists to face their clients with ease and confidence. So, expect less emphasis on client-therapist interaction, more on developing the therapist’s own internal somatic coherence, which is then brought to the therapeutic relationship.

The day is facilitated by Tim Brown and Clare Osbond of the Devon School for Embodied Therapy.
