About this Event

Film: Embers of Awakening: From Firestorms to Climate Healing (2022)

Director: Phyllis Ann Rosenfield

About the Film

Sixty-mile an hour winds, tinder dry hills, firestorm tornadoes that melted cars while traveling the length of a football field every three seconds—in October 2017, Sonoma County lost 22 lives, 5200 structures, and awoke to the deep pain of climate change. Embers of Awakening blends the powerful personal stories of fire survivors with interviews from scientists, activists, politicians, and other community members to inspire each viewer toward positive engagement and action. (1hr 15min)

Panel

Moderator: Leah Laramee, State of Hawaiʻi Climate Change Mitigation and Adaptation Commission
Speaker 1: Shirley Thompson (Producer, Editor)

About the Sustainability Film Series

The Sustainability Film Series is designed to explore contemporary issues at the intersection of human and natural environments. The series combines films and panel discussions aimed at linking film themes to Hawai‘i and the region. Panelists with differing expertise, including scientists, policy-makers, nonprofit experts, and artists, will discuss the many dimensions of existing efforts and sustainability solutions. The series is open to the public and designed for broad engagement. It is our hope that the series inspires communities of practice among students and community members by empowering you to engage in these important social and environmental issues.

In the Fall of 2024, we are delighted that sponsorship from the State of Hawaii Climate Change Mitigation and Adaptation Commission will allow us to provide these events to the public free of charge.
