About this Event

Programme Synopsis

Love travelling? Write about it and earn from it using digital media!

Traveling feels different today with beaches installing ‘Instagram points,’ ‘YouTube moments’ and Mandarin speaking humanoids while Airbnb-type services have brought about a commercialization of traditional hospitality. Correspondingly, travel writing - one of the oldest genres of literature - has evolved from Richard Haklyut’s 16th century compendium of items for a whaling expedition to 280 character tweets by @twobadtourists. When Google Search can reveal thousands of images and videos of every place or festival, what can a travel writer write about and how can digital media be used for this?

Through a lecture, several exercises and group discussions, participants will gain a clear understanding of the following:

  • Essentials skills for good travel writing
  • Basics of photography and video for travel writing
  • Making the most of social media
  • Blogs, Instagram, YouTube: Which one to use?
  • Where to publish – print and digital?
  • How to get published?
  • Paying the bills and more from travel writing
  • Ethics of travel writing

The workshop is suited for beginner and occasional travel writers. It will provide aspiring travel writers with an understanding of essential skills of travel writing using digital media. Recommendations for background reference materials will be provided.

This is an in-person workshop and will be held in SBC Training Room.

Kinokuniya members and AFCC 2021 festival pass holders can enjoy 10% off the workshop fee for this programme. Please contact [email protected] for the discount code before online registration. Please note that only one promo code can be used for each purchase.
