Vancouver's Elliot C. Way & the Band of Beauties (featuring Evan James Redsky on bass, Matt Kelly and Johnny 99 of City & Colour on pedal steel and electric guitar, and Eric M. Grice of Altameda on drums) make their way to Mills Hardware on Thursday May 23 in Hamilton, Ontario. Sharing the bill with Matt Paxton & the Pintos and the Ian James Bain Band, fine-tuned songwriting and americana music will be alive and living on King St. East. Catch some of Canada's top pedal steel players bringing the steel guitar to the steel town alongside some serious troubadours.
Over the past several years, Matt Paxton has performed his sizable folk-rock and alt-country repertoire across Canada, in the process gaining a reputation as one of the country's most promising up-and-coming singer-songwriters. Paxton's body of work now includes five albums, a handful of singles and EPs, and notable live appearances with the likes of Daniel Lanois, Blackie & The Rodeo Kings, Astrid Young, Evan Dando, and many more. Since forming The Pintos -- consisting of bassist Carrie Clark and drummer Robin Pirson, along with Altmann -- Paxton has proved he's ready to take things up a notch within the Americana world, with plenty of new music on the way courtesy of his own label, Down By The Point Records. Whether he's on stage or in the studio, Paxton wears his heart on his sleeve, delving into themes of love, loss, and self-reflection. His music has been played on CBC, SiriusXM, and featured by outlets such as CMT, Exclaim!, and more.
Ian James Bain has always been hard to pin down.. The son of an air force man, Ian called many places across Canada 'home' for a couple of years before packing up and moving down the road. Maybe that's why he was so drawn to music. Something constant, something to come back to. When he was a teenager living in a small rural Ontario town he found a bunch of like minded kids putting on DIY shows in church basements and legion halls – the rest just happened naturally. After many years working as a sideman in a range of genres Ian had come to feel most at home with the music that reflected his rural and nomadic upbringing – country. A student of classic country greats like Willie, Waylon, Jones and Merle, Bain's songs allow the essence of country music to filter through a lifetime of musical experience and reference, distilling into a complex creation that is as deeply steeped in tradition and nostalgia as it is unapologetically modern. Ian's debut album Where I Wanna Be was recorded in August 2021 at Port William sound by Jonas Bonetta. Released in late 2022, the album received widespread play on college and community radio across the country and singles garnered significant playlisting such as Gems on VHS monthly playlist. Not one to rest, only weeks after the release of his debut album Bain was back in the studio with producer and pedal steeler Aaron Goldstein (Daniel Romano, Kathleen Edwards, Julianna Riolino) recording a new EP of songs that reflect Bain’s growth as a performer and songwriter. Look for it in 2024.
