Elham 12 mile walk

This is a walk of 12 miles or so, in the Kent Downs, starting from Elham, traversing over meadows, ancient woodlands and quiet country lanes. There are a few steep climbs throughout, as we wander through the landscape of trees and ragstone villages, but the views are good, providing the weather is kind to us!
We commence our route along Duck Street to immediately join the Elham Valley Way for the first two miles, following it, over the valley slopes to Hall Downs, across as far as Wingmore. Crossing the Elham Valley Road, we enjoy a steady ascent up a winding and narrow lane, before reaching further lanes, some so little used there is more moss than tarmac at times.
Our circuit continues through Bladbean, passing Great Palmstead Farm, then later we trudge uphill through Atchester Wood, before eventually arrive at Stelling Minnis common to reach Stelling Minnis village.
At the time of publishing this walk, there is a bit of tinkering to sort out still with the route, as during a recce in November 2025, the next planned footpath was overgrown. But whichever route we decide to take from here, the group will definitely walk along Mill Lane, to view Davison's Mill, which was built in 1866.
As we meander back towards Exted, on the return leg to Elham, there is a short stretch of woodland, which could be muddy, then towards the finish, a steep sunken chalky byway, which is slippery when wet, so care is needed.
We will of course have our usual short picnic lunch stop, whilst the Rose & Crown is handily placed for a mid-walk drink. The Kings Arms, on our return to Elham is useful for those in need of some post walk socialising.
Dogs welcome, but on a short lead when required.
Difficulty: Moderate
Ascent: 950ft
Starting point - Roadside parking is usually available near the School, we will meet to start the walk by the entrance to St Mary the Virgin church, by the Duck Street road sign
Nearest postcode: CT4 6TJ
Walk leader is Kevin Hall
