In this discussion series we explore virtues by adapting them locally to the international FiloCafe discussion approach. In short FiloCafes are not about talking about philosophy but about practicing it.

The saying "moderation in all things" reflects an ancient attitude toward life where the entire moral framework was built on the principle of moderation: not to pursue too much or too little but just the right amount whether in wisdom courage or justice. But who or what determines what is just right or enough? How do we recognize the boundaries of moderation? How does one learn to be moderate?

Aristotle believed that temperance or moderation like other virtues could be learned through practice. Just as we learn justice by performing just actions and courage by performing courageous actions we become moderate by putting moderation into practice.

But what are moderate actions? Sometimes it seems that what is moderate for one person may be too much for another and too little for someone else whether it concerns wealth the application of justice reactions or lifestyle. What does moderation mean in relation to nature and the demands we place on ourselves?

Earth Overshoot Day is one measure that illustrates how humanity has not adhered to moderation. In Finland this limit was reached as early as April this year marking a record.

But what benefits come from being a friend of moderation? Does moderation bring happiness? Does following the principle of moderation lead to a balanced or rather a monotonous and dull life? Can the pursuit of moderation itself become excessive? There's talk of fear of life and unnecessary restraint.

Do you have personal experiences of either staying within moderation going overboard or perhaps abstaining from something entirely for the sake of your own or others' well-being?

You are welcome to share your experiences and/or views on the matter in our discussion circle which is open to diverse thoughts and where there is no obligation to speak or reach any particular conclusion. The most important thing is to take a small shared journey of thought which might at best offer a new perspective to take home with you.
