Elephant in the Caf\u00e9 - FiloCafe, Fortitude

In the second part we will be discussing fortitude another one of the classical virtues. As well as prudence fortitude or courage is shaped and driven by situational and personal factors: a deed requiring immense courage from one person may barely elicit a shrug from another.

“Courage means helping your friend in need.” These are the paraphrased words of a school kid in a newspaper interview. The traditional view in virtue ethics is that courage is a human virtue an attribute of character that manifests itself in actions – and perhaps also in our thoughts that shape our character. Courage is taking up action despite external or internal obstructions; despite the trolls freezing cold and possible avalanches between me and the mountaintop I continue climbing.

While accusations of cowardice may loom near foolhardiness is unlikely to lead to paradise either. Who wouldn’t have tested their limits and luck as a child? Courage can also be shown by being humble by setting limits and by expressing and experiencing emotions. Let us be courageous then and discuss courage.
