About this Event
For centuries, chemistry and alchemy have served as sources of inspiration for a number of artworks, including practically all genres of the literal, visual, and performing arts. Since 2019 – the year, which marked the 150th anniversary of the publication of the Periodic Table of Elements – Dr. Nick Tsarevsky (aka Atto Rex Vincent) from the Department of Chemistry has been writing educational poems dedicated to the chemical elements, several of which were supplemented with sonatas composed by Dr. Christine Hahn from Texas A&M University – Kingsville. Recently, some of the music was performed and recorded by SMU-based cellists Yvon Arseneault and Shaw Edwards.
Elemental Rhymes and Tunes – the third public event of the DCII Research Cluster on Science, Education, and the Performing Arts – will consist of a brief introduction by Nick Tsarevsky of the “Elemental Art” project and reading of selected “Elemental Poems” by Ben McDanald and Hudson Stauffer who are currently students in the Theatre Program at the Meadows School of the Arts. We will also play some of the recorded music. The event is directed by Associate Professor Sara Romersberger.
The event will kick off at 12:15pm on February 27th in the Fondren Science Building Room 133.
