About this Event
-PLEASE NOTE THE CONFERENCE WILL BE HELD IN SPANISH-
The "Camino Español" was a land route created during reign of Philip II to bring Spanish money and troops to war in the Netherlands.
The sea route became difficult due to the fall of much of the coast of the Netherlands into the hands of the rebels and the enmity of England and France, which dominated the English Channel. For this reason, the Spanish monarch had to look for an alternative route by land. Thus, a military corridor was opened from Milan to Brussels, passing through secure territories that were either under Spanish power or influence .
The main route began in the Milan, after crossing the Alps through the Mont Cenis Pass, Duchy of Savoy (present-day department of Savoy), passed through Franche-Comté, Lorraine, Luxembourg, the Bishopric of Liège and the Duchy of Brabant until it reached Brussels.
Most of the Tercios of Flanders moved along the Spanish Way, performing an amazing logistical feat for its time.
