Saturday, September 27th, at 7:30PM at The DiMenna Center’s Cary Hall, Ekmeles performs Another World, a program focused around the world premiere of a new NYSCA commission by Georg Friedrich Haas.Ekmeles has a special focus on exploring the limits of the possible in pitch. This ongoing project has found a perfect partner in Georg Friedrich Haas. His work has explored many aspects of tuning, always to expressive ends. His new work for Ekmeles …wie aus einer anderen Welt… or “like from another world” is no exception. The familiar and resonant overtone sonorities from his earlier work are complemented here by a litany of new experimental approaches, all embarked on with the particular skills and voices of Ekmeles in mind.
The program will also feature a work performed in memory of Peter Ablinger, a titan whose work expanded the notion of what music can be. His evocative Studien nach der Natur, or Nature Studies, has been in Ekmeles’s repertoire since 2011. In a series of tightly constructed canons, the work elevates environmental sounds to the level of concert music. Anthony Braxton's Composition No. 255 is a rich environment existing between composition and improvisation, using the composer's signature techniques in a fashion adapted particularly for voices. Extremely elaborate notated pages coexist with clefs and accidentals that mean any clef or accidental of the performer's choosing, and every performance of the work can be wildly different. Erin Gee's Mouthpiece 36 builds a world of the composer's idiosyncratic vocal techniques and sounds. Skittering pops and clicks, burbling and buzzing harmonies, and indescribable vocal gestures drawn from sounds of the natural world are built into a crystalline architecture.
