About this Event
Albert Einstein famously remarked that, had he not been a Physicist, he would have been a musician. On 8 October 2025, an 1894 German violin that once belonged to the great scientist was auctioned by Dominic Winter Auctioneers in Cirencester and sold for more than £1m. In a remarkable case of life imitating art, Paul Wingfield, The author of Einstein's Violin, a musical drama about Einstein's musical life, was asked to help authenticate the 1894 violin. The story began with a message from an auctioneer handed to Paul by a theatre manager after after a performance in London of Einstein's Violin: memorably, this message began 'I am not mad . . . '. In an entertaining and informative one-hour lecture, Paul will trace the history of Einstein's 1894 violin and will outline the painstaking process of establishing the provenance of this historic instrument. The event will take place in the Winstanley Lecture Theatre of Trinity College, Cambridge, at 5 pm on Sunday 23 November and will be followed at 7 pm by a performance of Einstein's Violin.
