Egg Tempera Painting for Beginners (Make Your Own Paint + Studies)

Egg tempera is one of the most beautiful and historic painting methods—used for centuries before oil painting took over. In this workshop, you’ll make your own paint from scratch using egg yolk + pigments, then learn how to use it through simple, satisfying studies.

No experience needed. This is equal parts art history magic and hands-on studio time.

You’ll learn:

• How to safely crack an egg and separate the yolk
• How to prepare the yolk binder (clean, simple method)
• How to mix pigments into usable egg tempera paint
• How to store your paint (short-term best practices)

You’ll leave knowing how to repeat this at home.

We’ll do guided studies to understand:

• Color mixing and value control
• Transparency vs opacity
• Layering and “building” an image with thin strokes
• Surface texture and brush handling

You’ll finish with studies (and possibly a small finished piece depending on time).

• Pigments + binders (egg, mixing materials)
• Painting surface(s) for studies
• Brushes + palettes + cleanup supplies
• Step-by-step demos + individual help

• Egg tempera dries quickly and rewards patience—great for focused, calm painting.
• Wear clothes you’re okay getting a little paint on.

This workshop uses raw egg as a traditional binder.

• Please avoid attending if you have a severe egg allergy.
• We maintain clean work habits, but this is a hands-on material process.
