Penn State Altoona’s biology club will host speaker Angie Spagnoli at 12:15 p.m. on Tuesday, Feb. 17, in the Fireside Lounge of the Slep Student Center.Spagnoli is an aquatics specialist with the Bureau of State Parks, Department of Conservation and Natural Resources. Her talk, “Effects of Invasive Plants on Freshwater Ecosystems,” will explore the ecological role of aquatic plants in freshwater systems, specifically how native species support water quality, habitat complexity, and food webs, and how invasive or nuisance plants can disrupt these functions.
Using examples from Pennsylvania State Parks, the talk highlights how park staff actively manage lakes and wetlands to balance ecosystem health, recreational use, and regulatory requirements. It also covers plant identification, growth strategies, and the science behind management decisions, including when intervention is necessary and how management actions are guided by ecological data and long-term stewardship goals.
Spagnoli is a 2018 Penn State Altoona graduate with degrees in environmental studies and biology.
