Schmidt will present an interactive workshop titled COLORING OUTSIDE THE LINES: Harnessing the Alchemy of Art and Inquiry to Boost Curiosity, Critical Thinking and Achievement . Art has a unique ability to captivate and engage learners of all ages. Paired with an inquiry-based approach, the result is active participation and a zest for learning. The goal of this presentation is to help teachers harness the powerful symbiosis of art and inquiry to stimulate robust, interactive conversations that encourage students to ask questions, explore ideas, improve critical thinking and academic achievement. It will explore the link between brain science, emotional intelligence and questioning strategies to reveal the fundamental key to unleashing learning in all students across the curriculum.
Laurel Schmidt has enjoyed a dual career as a classroom teacher and museum educator. In Los Angeles, she was a classroom teacher for 23 years, covering the spectrum from kindergarten to university. She was also a principal and director, consultant, lecturer, staff development specialist and author. She’s passionate about helping teachers incorporate art and inquiry techniques to invigorate learning for all students. Laurel has collaborated with museums in Los Angeles and New York, including LACMA, The Getty Center and Getty Villa, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Guggenheim and MoMA. Working with the Museum of Contemporary Art (MOCA) in Los Angeles, she co-authored Contemporary Art Start: A Curriculum Guide to Contemporary Art and Culture . Books by Laurel Schmidt include Seven Times Smarter: 50 Activities, Games and Projects to Develop the Multiple Intelligences in Your Child ; Gardening in the Minefield: A Survival Guide for School Administrators ; Classroom Confidential: The 12 Secrets of Great Teachers ; Social Studies That Sticks: How to Bring Content and Concepts to Life ; and How To Be Dead: A Love Story (Novel).
