Domestic Violence in Allen County

National Domestic Violence Awareness Month (DVAM) is observed in October to recognize victims and raise awareness of domestic violence.

The month is a time to:

· Honor victims: Recognize the millions of people who have experienced domestic violence

· Celebrate progress: Acknowledge the progress made to end domestic violence

· Connect with others: Connect with others working to create change

· Take Action: Individuals, advocates, and communities are encouraged to take action to help end domestic violence

The color purple is nationally recognized as the awareness color for DVAM. One national day of action during DVAM is Purple Thursday, or “Go Purple Day,” when people are encouraged to wear purple to symbolize peace, courage, survival, honor, and personal dedication.

The theme for DVAM 2024 is #HealHoldCenter, which focuses on embracing diverse paths to healing from violence and oppression, holding space for survivors, and centering those most marginalized.

DVAM was first observed in October 1981 as a national “Day of Unity”.
