Chalkbeat invites you to a conversation on how New York City Schools are supporting immigrant students and what challenges lie ahead.
About this Event

Chalkbeat New York's Dec. 18 event will build on Chalkbeat reporter Michael Elsen-Rooney’s recent coverage of ELLIS Preparatory Academy, a Bronx high school focused on older, newly arrived immigrant students. Elsen-Rooney followed ELLIS students and staff for six months last school year as they navigated President Donald Trump’s immigration crackdown, including the ICE arrest of an ELLIS student.

WNYC and Gothamist education reporter Jessica Gould will moderate a discussion with Elsen-Rooney alongside:

  • ELLIS Principal Norma Vega
  • Lara Evangelista, the Executive Director of the Internationals Network, a non-profit organization and facilitator of a network of public schools serving newcomer immigrants

If you are looking to hear insights on how NYC schools could better serve and educate immigrant students in Trump's second term, or to understand the issues facing schools serving immigrants more deeply, this event is for you. Please submit questions for the panelists when you RSVP. We hope to bring together a diverse group of educators, advocates, journalists and others working on issues related to immigrant youth. There will be time for audience members to mingle, learn about each other’s work, and share ideas.

This event is free to attend, but please RSVP to let us know you are coming.
