About this Event

Join us for a series of online events to launch the Education, Justice and Memory network (EdJAM). Bringing together members of the EdJAM team, Advisory Board and esteemed guests, these events explore the key concepts on which EdJAM is based, the connections between them and the possibilities for teaching and learning about violence and injustice that they open.

Event #1 EDUCATION: Dr. Tania Saeed hosts a conversation with Professors Arathi Sriprakash and Keri Facer. Chaired by Dr. Julia Paulson.

Education is sometimes framed as the only way to overcome past injustices and their legacies in the present. Yet the personal experiences of millions of learners around the world and of the work social theorists across many traditions show how schooling is often a site of violence and a process that maintains existing inequalities and creates new ones.

This panel grapples with this paradox by exploring the purposes and possibilities of education, inside and outside of schools, to help create just futures. With a focus on decolonial theory and practice, creativity and co-production, memory and reparative practice, and ecological and climate justice, panellist share their experience, research and questions around education.

Professor Arathi Sriprakash is Professor of Education at the University of Bristol and a member of EdJAM’s Advisory Board. Arathi is a founding member of the Race, Empire and Education Collective and lead author of the recent paper ‘Learning with the Past: Racism, education and reparative futures’.

Professor Keri Facer is Professor of Educational and Social Futures at the University of Bristol, the 3rd Zennström Professor in Climate Change Leadership at Uppsala University and a member of EdJAM’s Advisory Board. She led the Arts and Humanities Research Council’s Connected Communities programme and is author of the recent paper ‘Beyond business as usual: Higher education in the era of climate change’.

Dr. Tania Saeed is Associate Professor of Sociology at the Lahore University of Management Sciences and is an EdJAM Co-Investigator. She will soon take up a Marie Sklowdoska-Curie fellowship at Ca’ Foscari University of Venice and is co-author of the recent book ‘Youth and the National Narrative: Education, Terrorism and the Security State in Pakistan.’
