Hello Floral and Fungal Friends!
Although the valley floors are crispy and baking, the subalpine is popping off with plants! We will attempt to escape the heat by heading up to one of our highest elevation meadows situated at roughly 8,600'!
Details
On this walk, we will be exploring a diverse and wonderous local favorite. Situated adjacent to the renowned Chickadee Ridge, the Mount Rose Meadows hold a stunning array of native plants ranging from delicious to deadly. Hosting everything from the bog-beans to the sub-alpine lovers, this walk is truly one of the most unique locations in our immediate area.
While having a strong focus on the ethnobotanical uses of these plants, we will also cover the general ecology of this floristically diverse location and exactly what makes Mount Rose such a magical place to live when it comes to our natural places.
Teachers
This class will be led Trash Panda Permaculture. TPP is a group of nature-minded souls which focus on the enrichment of our local ecosystems and empower individuals to take an active part in that process. Specializing in ecology and botany, they lead walks and classes each month in the greater Reno/Tahoe area and are currently writing a book on California trees. They are long-time residents of the Sierra Nevada and have many years of foraging experience ranging from the forests of Washington to the Sonoran Desert and everywhere in between.
Time and Location
Tahoe Meadows Interpretive Loop. We will plan on meeting at 9am at the Tahoe Meadows Tahoe Rim Trailhead. **The south turnout on a paved road leading to the bathrooms and Visitor center!** This is just past the Mt. Rose Trailhead. If you hit Chickadee Ridge area, you've gone too far!
For folks that would prefer to carpool/caravan, we will meet at the Galena Creek Visitor's Center at 8:30am. Please let us know ahead of time if you would like to take advantage of this option.
The trail is an easy 1.5 mile loop on level ground, however, despite it's length, we plan to be walking between 2-3 hours given the immense number of fascinating plants that can be seen here. Walk will take place rain or shine.
