Jazz is a major influence, but he has always been open to incorporating other influences into his repetoire. In 2022, armed with a tent and a pad of manuscript paper, I began a 48-hour journey to Prudhoe Bay, Alaska – the northernmost town in the United States. From the Arctic Circle, we travelled south through the vastness of Alaska, the Yukon, and British Columbia, then crossed the border into Washington, Oregon, California, Nevada, and Arizona, before finally reaching Los Angeles.
This album is a personal account of that six-week journey: living in motels, camping on roadsides, and catching lifts with people of every background imaginable. It’s a reflection on the American spirit – the warmth, optimism, and generosity of its people – but also a glimpse into a more fractured reality. Drugs, homelessness, and poverty are ever-present, and a kind of collective naivety seems to soften the awareness of these deeper issues.
Over the course of the trip, I sketched more than thirty fragments of music – some full compositions, others just fleeting ideas. The pieces on this album capture snapshots of that experience: a broad yet honest reflection of my time in America.
