Ecstatic dance is a free-form dance and movement practice that uses music to guide the journey. It's somewhere between a dance party and a yoga class.
Key Principles and Practices:
🕺🏼Free-form Movement: Participants dance according to their own impulses and feelings, rather than following a set choreography or leader. Dance full-out as you would in your bedroom like no one is watching, with other people who are doing the same. No dance experience or skills are necessary at all!
🎵Music as a Guide: Curated music sets follow a "wave form" – starting slow, building to a peak, and descending into stillness – which helps guide the emotional and physical journey of the dance. The music is played loud so that it takes over the experience.
🧠Mindfulness and Presence: The practice encourages being fully present in the body and in the music. You may initially feel shy, which is normal! Let yourself dance through the shyness until it's melted away.
⏰Arrive on time: There is a guided beginning and an end, much like in a yoga class. Participants do not arrive and leave anytime, as you would if you danced to a DJ at a club. Participants can take breaks as needed or dance less intensely to recover their heart rate as the dance progresses.
✖️Sober Environment: Alcohol and drugs are prohibited to promote an unadulterated state of presence.
🦶🏼No Shoes needed: I recommended to dance barefoot to feel more free and connected to your own body. If you prefer to wear socks, be mindful that they might be slippery.
👯‍♀️No Judgment: The space is designed to be a non-judgmental, safe and welcoming space. Remember this is a movement exploration, so dance experience or skills are not necessary.
🌊What to bring: Water! Comfortable clothes to dance in. That's it!
