About this Event
Many parks and playgrounds around Adelaide occupy land that was subject to historical contaminating activities, including disposal of wastes and placement of uncontrolled fill material including industrial residues and street sweepings. Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons are commonly found in shallow soils at these sites, at concentrations exceeding ASC NEPM risk screening criteria for recreational land use. When discovered, this can be an alarming and sensitive issue for councils due to their duty of care to protect users of these public spaces from harm, and their workplace health and safety obligations to staff and contractors.
This seminar presents case studies of two playground site investigations by LBWco, which highlight the evolution of approach to risk characterisation over time and its impact on risk communication and remediation decision making by the respective councils.
