About this Event

Limited tickets available and you must be registered to attend. Meet at the Osprey Road parking area.

Join Dr. Katherine Clements, UF/IFAS Extension Sarasota County ecology and natural resources educator, for a stroll through the scrub, a unique environment in an ancient dune system. This unique habitat is home to a variety of plants and other animals. Learn about threatened, endemic, and keystone species such as the Florida scrub-jay and gopher tortoise. Appreciate the wonders of the scrub and how we can help protect this dwindling habitat. During this walk, participants will also have the special opportunity to observe bald eagles during their nesting season. Participants should wear comfortable footwear for walking in soft sand. Be prepared for limited shade. It is a great idea to bring binoculars if you have them.

Please register for this event ONLY at ufsarasotaext.eventbrite.com rather than any third-party websites, as they are not affiliated with our classes and events.

Most appropriate for ages 12 and up.

*****Trail Accessibility Information:

Trail surface/conditions: Most of these trails have a sandy or mowed grass surface. Some areas have deep sand and uneven surfaces. Several boardwalks exist within the preserve.

Potential obstacles/barriers/hazards: Trails adjacent to the bay and mangrove shorelines often experience temporary flooding and wash out due to rain and high tide events. Boardwalks may also be slippery following rain and tidal events. Uneven terrain, roots and stumps are associated with this natural area preserve. To prevent ATV entry, visitors must pass through pedestrian walk throughs and chicane gates to enter the preserve. Certain trails may be closed depending on bald eagle nesting activity.

Accessibility options available: There are no ADA accessible trails in this preserve; trails are sandy/mowed natural surfaces.

***Please Note: Instructors may choose paths through varied terrain, surfaces, and changes in elevation. For accessibility questions, please contact for more information.

INSTRUCTOR: UF/IFAS Extension Sarasota County educator.
