UNDERSTANDING SOCIETY INSIGHTS 2023

Understanding Society will be launching its eleventh annual Insights report at the event, showcasing these and other new research based on the Study’s data. The report focuses on three themes that reflect the pressing challenges faced by the UK we seek to move on from the pandemic: Resilience and vulnerability in times of change; long-term spatial inequalities; and work redefined.

Economic insecurity and resilience in times of disruptive change

An environment of slow growth and high inequality, combined with a series of crises over the last decade, has left many households in the UK in a perilous state. Emergency government measures have protected millions of people during key crises but the UK has experienced deeper economic variations in performance compared to many of its OECD counterparts. Recent relative growth has been weak and future prospects remain uncertain. The consequence is lives devasted, both financially and mentally, housing aspirations delayed, and high levels of emergency public spending required to provide immediate assistance.

What insights do longitudinal data provide about risks faced by different groups as a result of shocks, events and adversity? Are precarious lives an endemic feature of UK society or can we better prepare for uncertain times, economic insecurity and the next big crisis? This half day hybrid event will look at research on the experiences of specific groups, providing new insights and a deeper understanding of the effects of change and turbulence across housing, energy and pensioner poverty. Research findings will include:

  • People experiencing fuel poverty: what are the links between fuel poverty and financial distress?
  • People facing housing affordability problems: what is the impact of sustained exposure to housing affordability problems?
  • Pensioners at risk of poverty: how precarious is life in older age and its proximity to poverty?

Economic insecurity, driven by lack of resources to support an adequate standard of living and anxiety generated by lack of economic safety, has been attracting much interest lately. What are the experiences of these groups and the impact on their financial and mental health? Do cumulative shocks have different effects to one-off experiences? Economic stability is now the new buzz word for the government, but does the UK also need a long-term plan for improving safety nets, alternative policy instruments for households and mental health support?
