About this Event

The Early Cancer Institute Seminar series aims to highlight early cancer related research across a range of disciplines, promote discussion and inspire new ideas and connections. Join fellow researchers for lunch and an opportunity to network.

On Tuesday 27th January we welcome Oscar Fernandez-Capetillo, Professor of Cancer Therapy, who holds a joint appointment between CNIO, Madrid and the Karolinska Institute, Sweden.

Oscar will speak on: Overcoming resistance to cancer therapies.

A buffet lunch will be served from 12.30pm in the area outside the CAB lecture theatre and the talk will begin at 1.00pm followed by a Q&A. Please note that no food or drink may be taken in the lecture theatre.

Speaker biography: Oscar Fernandez-Capetillo did his PhD in the University of The Basque Country working with mouse models of autoimmunity with Dr. Ana Zubiaga. For his postdoctoral stay he joined the group of André Nussenzweig, where he started to work on DNA repair, particularly focusing on the role of histone H2AX.

In 2005, he joined CNIO to lead the Genomic Instability Group where he has been ever since. Initial works from the lab concentrated on exploring the role of replicative stress in cancer and ageing, for which the group combined cell biology, mouse models and drug development projects (including the discovery of the first selective ATR inhibitors). More recently, the group has expanded to other areas such as mechanisms of drug resistance and neurodegenerative diseases.

Oscar has received numerous awards and recognition for his research and has been an EMBO Member since 2016. He is currently the Director of the Molecular Oncology Programme at CNIO which he shares with a dual affiliation as a Professor at the Karolinska Institute in Sweden.
