Inspired by KNMA’s ongoing exhibition Extraordinary Line, which explores the expressive power of marks, gestures, and drawing across time, this workshop introduces families to the visual cultures of ancient civilizations. From Egyptian murals and Mesopotamian reliefs to Greek pottery and Indus Valley seals, participants will discover how ancient artists used minimal lines and symbolic forms to record rituals, histories, and collective memory.Families will observe ancient motifs and reinterpret them through freehand drawing on textured surfaces such as cork sheets, evoking the feeling of ancient walls, carved stones, and timeless storytelling traditions. Through these drawings, participants will explore how ancient cultures communicated through imagery, patterns, and expressive lines, transforming early visual languages into their own contemporary interpretations. This process encourages a deeper understanding of how drawing has always been a tool for storytelling, documentation, and cultural expression, connecting the earliest civilisations to our contemporary marks on paper.Audience Takeaways:* Explore ancient symbolic forms and learn how civilizations used drawing as a historical record* Engage with the themes of *extraordinary line* and understand drawing as an enduring mode of expression* Experiment with tracing, texture, and visual storytelling inspired by ancient forms* Take home a personal illustrated scroll or vase scene that reimagines ancient storytelling through modern drawingWhile you’re here, we invite you to also explore KNMA’s ongoing exhibitions — please touch gently: zines, comics, ephemera; jo ġāyab hai, aur hāzir bhi – book sculptures of Saba Hasan; extraordinary line; and moomin 80 – the door is always open, the first-ever Moomin presentation in India.
