The East Baton Rouge Parish Pr*son Reform Coalition is pleased to recognize the power and opportunity in our many partnerships on Saturday, February 22nd from 11 am - 2 pm at the River Center Branch Library. As we begin our 7th year of working to end in-custody deaths in East Baton Rouge Parish and work towards a safe and thriving community for all it is our honor to gather our partners and offer an opportunity to say thank you and to share the accomplishments that we have achieved together. The theme for this year's celebration is "Not Officers of the Court: The Power of Partnerships to Help Build a Safe and Thriving East Baton Rouge Parish.
We will recognize 8 partners for game changing contributions.
Voter Engagement: Chicken Shack, a 90 year old legendary Baton Rouge eatery that has partnered with the Coalition for an amazing event called "2 piece Tuesday Voter Engagement"
Community Engagement: East Baton Rouge Parish Library System for being a resource for justice impacted residents
Veteran Engagement: Louisiana Departmet of Veteran Affairs for a unique and powerful partnership to insure justice impacted veterans are not lost.
Domestic Violence Survivor Engagement: The Butterfly Society for partnering to serve the most at risk population in the criminal system.
Amplification Engagement: The Justice and Accountability Center of Louisiana Impacted Survivor's Solitary Council for their work in lifting up the impact of solitary confinement.
Family Support: Grandparents Raising Grandchildren Resource Center of Louisiana for their work supporting justice impacted families.
Immigrant/Refugee Support: Louisiana Organization for Refugees and Immigrants for a groundbreaking partnership to protect the human and civil rights of refugees and immigrants in the criminal system.
Youth Support: Youth Oasis for serving at risk youth that are targeted for victimization
Our keynote speaker will be the legendary educator, social worker, and civil rights activist, Marcela Hernandez.
Marcela is a proud Latina social worker, deeply committed to making a meaningful and lasting impact on society. Originally from Colombia, She moved to the US at 18, where she began building my life from scratch with the unwavering support of God and her family. Through hard work and determination, she earned a double degree in Sociology and Social Work from Southern University and later completed a Master’s degree in Social Work from LSU.
She is a nationally recognized change agent that advocates for justice, equality, and social change. She has a gift for driving systemic transformation, with a particular focus on macro-level social work, policy advocacy, immigration, and environmental justice. She has an extensive background working with diverse communities, including those affected by sexual abuse, trauma, substance abuse, PTSD, and cultural adjustment. Trained in COPE, Triple P Positive Parenting, crisis intervention, suicide prevention, and basic immigration laws.
