EASY ACCESS HISTORY, HERITAGE & OAK WALK
Join us at Panshanger Park for a captivating journey through history!
Step back in time with David, our expert history volunteer, as he guides you on a fascinating walk through the northern part of Panshanger Park. This event commemorates Ettie Desborough, the last member of the family to live at Panshanger, marking the anniversary of her passing on May 28, 1952. Learn about Ettie’s extraordinary life as a renowned "Society Hostess", her elite circle known as “The Souls”, and the distinguished guests she welcomed to Panshanger House—including royalty, ambassadors, and prime ministers.
What to Expect on the Walk:
🚶 A gentle, under-a-mile stroll along mainly level terrain, perfect for those who prefer a shorter distance.
🏡 Explore the historic grounds where Panshanger House once stood, imagining its former grandeur.
🌊 Take in breathtaking views across Repton’s Broadwater from the South Terrace.
🍊 Visit the Orangery & Dairy Garden, uncovering hidden stories of the estate.
🌳 Stand beneath the legendary Panshanger Great Oak, a tree that has witnessed centuries of history and hosted esteemed visitors.
The route consists of gravelly and grassy paths with a slight downhill slope near the Oak and an optional uphill return. If preferred, you may retrace your steps to avoid the incline. Please wear suitable footwear, as paths may become uneven or muddy in wet conditions.
Meeting Point & Parking:
📍 Meet at the Panshanger House site, where free parking is available.
🚗 Use the B1000 Tarmac entrance at White Lodge, then follow the track straight to the house site. Directions will be issued closer to the date. (Do not use Thieves Lane.)
🔒 The area will be locked after the walk. If you’d like to explore the park further, please move your vehicle to the chargeable Thieves Lane Car Park before the event ends.
