About this Event
This class offers an introduction to two foundational systems of Eastern herbal medicine: Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) and Ayurveda.
Amy will begin with an exploration of TCM, a holistic healing system developed over thousands of years in China. Students will learn core concepts such as Qi (vital energy), Yin and Yang, and the Five Elements, alongside diagnostic tools like pulse and tongue analysis. The class will also touch on key therapeutic approaches—including herbal medicine, acupuncture, and dietary therapy—used to restore balance and support long-term wellness.
In the second half of the class, Tejal will guide students through the roots and philosophy of Ayurvedic medicine, the ancient healing system of India. She will introduce the three doshas (Vata, Pitta, Kapha), foundational principles of Ayurvedic diagnosis, and highlight important herbs, dietary guidelines, and lifestyle practices that form the basis of this tradition.
Together, these teachings offer insight into how Eastern systems of herbalism view the body, mind, and environment as deeply interconnected—and how they promote healing through harmony and balance.
Amy Hess is a Chinese American acupuncturist and herbalist practicing in Ventura, CA. Amy uses acupuncture and herbal medicine to address pain and injury, as well as systemic health concerns such as digestion, sleep, sexual health, addiction, emotional, autoimmune and chronic conditions. As a former full spectrum doula, Amy is passionate about working with people through pregnancy, postpartum, termination, and loss. She uses acupuncture and bodywork to support optimal fetal positioning and the physiological cascade of labor and birth. Amy is a doctoral candidate and faculty member at the Academy of Chinese Culture & Health Sciences. Outside of the clinic or classroom, you can find Amy in the ocean, gardening, hiking or crafting in the kitchen.
Tejal Swami's passion for Ayurvedic medicine began in childhood, inspired by the healing power of home remedies. She pursued this calling professionally, earning her degree in Psychology from UCSB and later becoming a certified Ayurvedic Practitioner through the Southern California University of Health Sciences. Today, she runs a growing practice in Ventura, helping others achieve wellness through harmony with nature.
