Diwali, also known as "The Festival of Lights," marks the victory of light over darkness and good over evil. It commemorates the day when Rama returned to his kingdom in Ayodhya with his wife Sita after defeating the demon king Ravana. After the great battle, villagers lit tea lights along their path to guide their way home. While kirtan is beautiful to listen to and participate in, the focus is on the essence behind the words, the intention while singing, and the influence it has on our consciousness. At its core, kirtan is a powerful ancient spiritual practice that, when approached with an open mind and heart, has the ability to attune us to a greater reality.
During this hour, we will sing devotional chants dedicated to Rama and others of the East, interspersed with periods of short meditations. All you need to bring is an open mind and heart; please bring your own cushion if you prefer to sit on the floor; chairs will also be provided.
