About this Event

The third of our excursions to the East End takes in the woodland of Tower Hamlets Cemetery as well as the historic streets of Bow. As in all these walks we will be looking at street trees and pavement plants, wasteland shrubs and wall-top mosses - and hearing their stories; how they got their names, the medical, magical and edible uses they have been put to and the folklore we have attached to them.

Meeting point: Outside Bow Road Underground Station

Bob Gilbert is the author of Ghost Trees: Nature and People in a London Parish (Saraband, 2018) and The Green London Way (Lawrence & Wishart, 2012).

He has written a column for Ham & High on urban wildlife for the last twenty years. A contributor to TV and radio, including Natural World and BBC Radio 4’s The Food Programme, Bob has also been a stand-up comedian, a long-standing campaigner for inner city conservation and chair of `The Garden Classroom’, a charity that promotes environmental education in London.

We are running this event as part of Great Big Green Week
