East Axis Trio is a visionary improvising trio consisting of renowned musicians Matthew Shipp, Kevin Ray, and Eric McPherson.
Matthew Shipp has established himself as the premier jazz pianist of his generation over the course of a three-decade career including many acclaimed albums under his own name plus his prominent tenure in the David S. Ware Quartet and a vast array of collaborations with the likes of Spring Heel Jack, Ivo Perelman, Sabir Mateen, Darius Jones, Joe Morris, Jemeel Moondoc, Mat Walerian, and many more.
Starting in the bebop era, the piano-bass-drums lineup has been the most classic jazz format in which the piano is featured, accumulating the weight of history and critical expectations. In this setting, a non-mainstream player such as Shipp can infiltrate Newport Jazz Festival, Jazz at Lincoln Center, the Museum of Modern Art in New York City, and other Establishment bastions in a familiar format and then unleash his ideas on audiences that might not normally be exposed to his style, but thanks to hearing it in the communal language of the piano trio, they can better understand the message…
Born December 11, 1970 and raised in New York, Eric McPherson was immersed in music from birth on: Richard Davis, his godfather and an icon among jazz bassists, was present at his birth and suggested he be named after Eric Dolphy. McPherson attended LaGuardia High School of the Arts and performed in the New York All City High School and McDonald's High School Tri-State Big Bands. He was awarded a full scholarship by the Hartt School of Music at the University of Hartford in Connecticut to study at the school's Jackie McLean Institute. While still a student, he joined Jackie McLean's band. Since then he has played with artists like Abraham Burton, Andrew Hill, Pharoah Sanders, Claudia Acuña, Richard Davis, Avishai Cohen, Kurt Rosenwinkel, Jason Moran, Greg Osby and Jeremy Pelt. Besides his performances he works as a music educator and conducts workshops and master classes worldwide.
Bassist Kevin Ray has recorded or played with John Stubblefield, Oliver Lake, Greg Osby, Andrew Hill, Marty Ehrlich, Elliott Sharp, John Hicks, Hamiet Bluiett and Nels Cline. Ray has performed in the premieres of works by Joe McPhee, Leroy Jenkins and others. The bassist co-leads the adventurous trio 10³²K's with trombonist/trumpeter Frank Lacy, percussionist Andrew Drury and briefly, the late Roswell Rudd. The group, to date, has issued two releases, That Which is Planted and The Law of Vibration.
Ray studied at The New School under Reggie Workman, his first serious, in-depth exposure to the broad discipline of jazz music. In recent years, Ray has been working in an all-star quartet East Axis, with pianist Matthew Shipp, saxophonist Scott Robinson and drummer Gerald Cleaver. A new trio version of the ensemble features Shipp along with renowned drummer Eric McPherson.
