To relaunch the EA branch, we are holding a free event at Lynford Arboretum, Norfolk, a Forestry England managed site.
Arrival from 4.30 where there will be the opportunity to meet the committee members, a climbing demonstration by Walton’s Tree Services, and Lee & Co. from Barcham Trees will also have a stand plus the ability to network with fellow EA Branch members. There will be food to purchase (cash only) until around 5.30 from the Mexican food Truck, who will have 3 different offerings including vegetarian, but numbers are limited so be quick!
Bob Widd – branch chair for the EA will welcome attendees at around 5.15pm ready for the start at 5.30pm. Julian Dormandy – Bedgebury Pinetum Supervisor, will give a guided tour of the arboretum talking about succession, climate change and species selection. This will be informal, and we welcome open discussion and questions.
Following the walk/ talk (1-1.5hrs) there will be a tree planting ceremony (tree donated by Barcham Trees) and the opportunity to question Nicky Russell Site manager about managing the arboretum for people and trees. Bob will close around 7pm although the arboretum will remain open if attendees wish to explore further (weather permitting!)
Dogs are welcome on leads.
About the Arboretum
Lynford Arboretum is Britain’s most easterly arboreta in public ownership and incredibly important in terms of this location in illustrating how tree species might be affected by continental influences related to climate change, pests, and diseases.
The Arboretum is one of 19 Forestry Commission Arboreta and Forest Gardens scattered across the UK. It is the 3rd largest individual collection (behind Westonbirt Arboretum and Bedgebury Pinetum). Being situated in the driest area of the country, it experiences generally warm summer temperatures extending well into autumn. Conversely, in Thetford Forest, frost can and has occurred in every month of the year. Due to this, it is likely to experience greater regional variations in the climate than other areas of the country. In this sense it is ideally located to act as a sentinel site of changes in tree health and growth and for monitoring the rise of any new pests and diseases
The Arboretum is situated within an area designated by Historic England as a Grade 2 Site on the National Register of Parks and Gardens.
Today, Forestry England (FE) works in partnership with the Friends of Thetford Forest (FoTF) to manage the Arboretum’s collection, conservation areas and heritage and for recreational access. It is a popular visitor destination for local people and bird spotters with an estimated 300,000 visits per annum.
