Artists David J Emerson Young and Dena Hawes introduce a collaborative art exhibition intended to address living and nonliving elements of the earth’s ecosystem, and disruptions to the system’s fragile balance that supports all life on earth. Nature has a very wide definition, and is vital to keeping us emotionally, psychologically and physically healthy. As a whole, this exhibition is intended to create a space of reflection about the beauty and irreplaceability of the natural world.
David’s painting and pen & ink drawings apply metaphoric and symbolic approaches in what he calls “the complexity of emotional opposition” — how a viewer can simultaneously behold both the beauty of the artwork image, and the devastation that is occurring.
Dena’s work are small sculptures that combine elements from nature, such as driftwood, creek stones, and animal bone with metal work.
Together, their work is a marriage between different approaches to addressing the topic of global warming and environmental degradation, while also honoring the beauty of the earth and the complexity of each eco-system as a source of inspiration. The most obvious common threads between their work are the exploration of a psychological relationship between life and art; a search for cognitive and emotional stimulants for transformations to precipitate constructive social change; and a profound adoration of the natural world.
Special thanks to the Brabson Family Foundation and the Bloomington Arts Commission for their generous support.
