About this Event

Early George Romero Double Feature

Although he remains best known for his epochal zombie films starting with NIGHT OF THE LIVING DEAD, Pittsburgh-based independent filmmaker George Romero (1940 - 2017) explored a number of other genres early in his career including these two rarely-screened gems:

SEASON OF THE WITCH, 1973, AGFA / Arrow Films, 89 min. Romero’s fascinating occult take on the feminist movement of the early Seventies stars Jan White as an unhappily-married Pittsburgh housewife trapped in a suburban nightmare – until she goes to a Tarot-reading at the home of the woman who runs the secret local witches’ coven. Soon she finds herself dabbling in witchcraft and casting spells to seduce her teenage daughter’s boyfriend, while being plagued by night-time visions of a masked intruder. “SEASON OF THE WITCH is loaded with references to the occult, but owes as much to [feminist writer] Betty Friedan as Anton LaVey.” – Keith Phipps, AV Club.

THE CRAZIES, 1973, AGFA / Arrow Films, 103 min. “After reinventing the zombie film with NIGHT OF THE LIVING DEAD, George Romero made his first color horror film THE CRAZIES, another social commentary cloaked in exploitation trappings about a small Pennsylvania town decimated by the accidental release of a dangerous biochemical weapon in the water supply (thanks to a crashed truck.) Though not an official part of Romero's ongoing DEAD series, THE CRAZIES still fits in just fine thanks to its depictions of normalcy shedding apart from the inside and a ruthless but incompetent military ultimately driven by self-interest -- themes which would reach their most crystallized version in DAY OF THE DEAD.” -- Nathaniel Thompson, Mondo Digital.

Ticket price: $15 (in-person only)
