The Eaglehawk Neck Hall celebrates the Pirates Bay history each year with a morning market from 9.30 - 12.30pm and an evening party from 5.30-10.30pm with live music at the Hall in January- all with a piratical theme. History of the naming of Pirates Bay
On the 27th January, 1822, six convicts absconded from Hobart in a pilot boat and made their way to what is now known as Eaglehawk Neck. Here they crossed the isthmus into Monge Bay where they found an opportunity to make their escape from Van Diemen's Land on a larger vessel; a schooner named Seaflower.
Five of the convicts were captured within the following weeks; three in Bass Strait and two in New South Wales. What became of the sixth is a mystery to be solved.
Following this brazen act of piracy, Monge Bay became known by a new name; โPirates Bayโ.
